Energy, Explained: The 2026 Evolution
An exciting new chapter in the blog's journey
Hi everyone,
When I started Energy, Explained, my goal was simple: to demystify and document humanity’s energy journey. Together, we have traveled from the rice paddies of the Mekong Delta to the control rooms of the Spanish grid, geeking out over undersea cables and carbon prices along the way.
A big thanks to the ~300 of you for being part of this first chapter.
In 2026, we are levelling up.
I realise that the broader story I want to tell isn’t just about regional grids and/or policies, but one of civilisational engineering. It is about the technologies, machines, and systems that allow 8 billion people to survive and thrive on Earth.
This year, I’m introducing new content types to help decode this complexity:
Hardware Deep Dives: We are moving beyond where energy is produced to how the fundamental machinery works. Expect detailed breakdowns of industrial leviathans, from kilometre-long ships to microscopic crystals, that power our world.
Visual Schematics: I find that text can only explain so much. You will see a major upgrade in visuals, with custom diagrams and maps designed to make complex engineering concepts click instantly.
Substack Notes: I will frequently share shorter insights, schematics, and energy news via Substack Notes. The Substack app is the best way to view these notes, so make sure you have it installed to join the conversation.
Global Lens: While I will continue to highlight the Asian energy story, 2026 will take us global. We will explore the everyday engineering miracles happening in Nordic bedrock, American deserts, and outer space.
You can expect the same thoroughness you’re used to, but with a wider aperture and a renewed focus on the human ingenuity shaping our future.
One favour to ask of you:
I have an ambitious goal to grow this community significantly in 2026. If you know someone—an engineer, an investor, or just a curious friend—who wants to understand how the modern world is powered, please share “Energy, Explained” with them.
Let’s build the largest community of energy optimists on the Internet. Happy New Year!

Excited!!
